Women's Basketball Adds Thrun As Assistant Coach

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball program has announced the addition of Darin Thrun as its assistant coach.  Thrun comes from Eastern Michigan University, where he spent the past four seasons as the Eagles' assistant coach after spending three years as a member of the Michigan State University women's basketball coaching staff.

"I am extremely excited to add Darin to the coaching staff here at Saginaw Valley," stated SVSU women's basketball head coach Jamie Pewinski, who begins her first season at the helm of the program.  "He has a great understanding of the game, has recruited the state of Michigan and is an extremely hard worker.  His experiences at his two prior institutions have prepared him to take this step and help turn this program into a consistent winner."

In Thrun's final season with the Eastern Michigan, the Eagles finished with a 24-13 overall record and recorded the program's first two postseason victories in the Women's National Invitational Tournament.  The 24 wins was one of 16 single-season records the team set during the 2010-11 season.

In his first season at Eastern Michigan, Thrun helped mentor the Eagles' post players in their run to a share of the Mid-American Conference West Division Championship. The group combined to average 27.2 points and 18.1 rebounds.

The 2009-10 campaign was just as productive for the Green and White, as the Eagles finished with a 22-9 overall record and an 11-5 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The Eagles became the first MAC women's basketball program to post a 20-win season following a year in which the team won less than 10 games. EMU also finished just one victory shy of equaling the 1985-86 Ohio University squad for the biggest single-season turnaround in league history.

During his tenure at Michigan State, the Spartans compiled a 79-23 record, earning the 2005 Big Ten Conference regular-season championship, a Big Ten Tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament runner-up finish. While at MSU, he was responsible for game operations, travel preparations and film exchange while assisting in recruiting and other administrative duties.

The Nashville, Mich. native has extensive summer camp coaching experience, having worked as an instructor at MSU, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Michigan. He also attended the Five-Star Basketball Camp and was the AAU Under-18 basketball coach in Nashville, Mich.

Thrun graduated from Michigan State University in 2006 with a bachelor's of science degree in Biological Science and a minor in Chemistry.
