UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell at home to the Michigan Tech University Huskies by a score of 64-54 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match-up on Thursday night (2/24).

Saginaw Valley held a two-point advantage at 6-4 at the 15:37 mark in the first half after a free throw by sophomore Jasmine Woods (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS).  Michigan Tech would then go on a 13-0 run to grab a 17-6 lead with 6:43 remaining in the half, capped-off by a Lucy Dernovsek layup.  A jumper by senior Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) cut the lead to nine at 17-8.  That would be followed by another Tech run, this one 9-0, to make the score 26-8 in the Huskies' favor.  A layup by sophomore Jasmine Kennedy (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) cut the lead to 26-10.  Michigan Tech would add another bucket to head into halftime with a 19-point advantage, 29-10.

Michigan Tech extended its lead to as much as 27 points twice in the second half, and led by 21 with 3:07 remaining in the contest.  SVSU would score 11 straight points to cut the lead to 10 points, when the score was 64-54 with 24 seconds left.  That is where the score would remain, as the Huskies closed-out with the 10-point victory.

Kennedy earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors after scoring 10 points and grabbing five rebounds.  Burkhardt had a team-high 12 points and six rebounds for SVSU.  Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich.) added nine points for the Cardinals while Cheritee Green (Wyoming Park, Mich.) had a game-high nine rebounds.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 7-18 overall and 4-14 in GLIAC play while the Huskies improve to 22-2 overall and 17-1 in league play.  SVSU will be back in action again on Saturday (2/26), as is hosts the second part of its breast cancer awareness weekend.  Included in the festivities will be a breast cancer survivor recognition event, which will take place at halftime of the men's game.  The women's contest is set to tip at 8:00 pm.
