Saginaw Valley Defeats Urbana, 66-63

URBANA, Ohio - The Saginaw  Valley State University women's basketball team defeated Urbana University today (Feb. 12), 66-63. With the win the Cardinals improve to 7-15 overall on the season while Urbana falls to 7-13 overall on the season.

Saginaw Valley went ahead as many as six points in the first half of play after an Aysha Boston (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance HS) lay-up. Boston lead the Cardinals in the first half of the contest with eight points, while freshman Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich./Brown City HS) added five points. Saginaw Valley shot 5-for-9 from beyond the arc for a 55.6 three-point percentage. The Cardinals entered the locker room at the end of the half trailing the Blue Knights by one point.

Saginaw Valley came out strong in the second half taking the lead for good from Urbana at the 8:20 mark. The lead came when Greene sank a jump shot and just under a minute later made a shot from beyond the arc to give the Cardinals a five point advantage. Sophomore Cheritee Green (Wyoming Park, Mich./Wyoming Park HS) earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors scoring 10 of her 14 total points in the second half. Greene added eight points for Saginaw Valley, while sophomore Jasmine Woods tacked on seven points. The Cardinals capitalized on 11-of-13 shots from the free throw line for a 86.7 free throw percentage.

Green ended the night with 14 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, while Greene ended the night with 13 points. Both senior Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) and Woods tacked on seven for Saginaw Valley, while sophomore Jasmine Kennedy had nine points and grabbed five rebounds.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 16) when they travel to Northwood to take on the Timberwolves in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action. Tip off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
