Cardinals Caged by Bulldogs, 83-66

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley women's basketball team fell to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Ferris State Saturday (Feb. 5), 83-66. With the loss the Cardinals fall to 6-14 overall on the season, and 4-10 in the GLIAC, while the Bulldogs improve to 10-10 overall on the season, and 6-8 in the GLIAC.

The Cardinals fell behind 13-3 just five minutes into the first half of play. Saginaw Valley would come within five points with a little under 10 minutes of play left in the half when sophomore Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich. /Powers Catholic HS) made a lay-up to make the score 20-15.  The Cardinals continued to try and battle back but it would not be enough as they would enter the locker room trailing the Bulldogs, 44-31. Saginaw Valley was lead by Meijer "Player of the Game" Cheritee Green (Wyoming Park, Mich./Wyoming Park HS) who had 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. As a team the Cardinals shot 10-for-13 from behind the line.

Saginaw Valley tried to battle back in the second half of play but their efforts would not be enough as Ferris State went up as many as 26 with 5:33 left in the match up. Senior Kelley Wesp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este HS) had a strong second half for the Cardinals scoring 11 points, while freshman Kristen Greene added six points in the contest.

Green ended the night for Saginaw Valley with 16 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, while Herzog finished with 14 points and pulled down four rebounds.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 9) when they return home to face Northwood University. Tip off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
