Joseph Gucwa III will be in his fourth season as the Diving Coach for the Cardinals in the upcoming 2021-22 season.

Joe came to SVSU after competing as a student-athlete at Grand Valley State University, where he graduated in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in communications.

Under Gucwa's guidance in 2018-19, diver Libby Caird qualified for the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championships and finished in 15th place in the 1-meter diving event with 385.45 points to earn All-American Honorable Mention honors.

Gucwa again would help Caird to the NCAA Championship meet in 2019-20. Caird finished 18th in the 3-meter diving prelims with a score of 362.65.

The 2020-21 season saw more success for Gucwa and his divers. Once again Libby Caird qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. She would finish 12th overall in the 3-meter event and 9th in the 1-meter event. The Cardinals also made history when Justin Ott became the first ever NCAA First Team All-American for the men's program. Ott finished in 7th place in the 1-meter dive with a score of 455.45.

In 2021-22, Gucwa guided Adrien McGill and Libby Caird to GLIAC titles. McGill swept the 1-meter and 3-meter titles at the GLIAC Championships hosted by SVSU, while Caird took home the 1-meter title and finished runner-up in the 3-meter. Both student-athletes were named Diver of the Year by the GLIAC following the championship meet. Caird and McGill qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships along with Adelaide Spencer. At the NCAA DII National meet, Caird earned Honorable Mention All-American in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, while McGill took home Honorable Mention All-American in the 3-meter dive.

Gucwa was an eight-time All-American while competing for the Lakers.
