SVSU Softball moves to 5-1 after Saturday split

DES PLAINES, Ill. -- The SVSU Softball team split its games on Saturday (Feb. 22) at the Rosemont Dome Invitational, losing to Winona State by a 10-2 score before defeating Hillsdale in the nightcap by a count of 5-3. 

The split moves the Cards to 5-1 overall on the season through the opening six games. It marks the best start to a season through six games since the 2010 campaign, when SVSU was 5-1 as well and went 7-1 througs its first eight contests. 

Game #1

The Cards tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the 4th inning on an RBI single from Sabrina Sage and a sacrifice bunt by Sara Moos that plated Sage later. 

In the top of the 6th, however, Winona State scored eight runs and held SVSU scoreless in the bottom half to claim the 10-2 win. 

Saginaw Valley was held to three hits in the game, with those coming from Shelby Misiak, Blasia Moyler and Sage. Misiak had the only extra-base hit with a double.

In the Circle

Julia Mundy got the start and worked 5.0 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Jaclyn Groves allowed a run and Alyssa Muench allowed four on five hits in her one inning pitching. 

Game #2

SVSU tied the game at 2-2 in the 3rd inning and added two more runs in the 4th to make the count 4-2. Meagan VerVaecke, Shelby Misiak and Sarah Gersch (2) had RBI for the Cardinals through the first four innings of action. 

The Chargers added a run in the bottom of the 6th inning to trim the deficit to 4-3 but Saginaw Valley added an insurance run in the 7th to put the game's score at 5-3, which would prove to be the final.

Gersch finished with three hits and two RBI. Misiak, Julia Salisbury and Moos all added two hits as well in the game. 

In the Circle

Emily Depew got the win in the circle, tossing 4.0 innings while allowing four hits and a single run. She struck-out five batters. Kasey Bagelmann picked up her third save of the season after working a scoreless final inning.
