Friday sweep moves SVSU Softball to 4-0

DES PLAINES, Ill. -- The Saginaw Valley State Softball team moved to 4-0 on the 2020 season after posting a second straight sweep on Friday at the Rosemont Dome Invitational. The Cardinals posted an 8-3 victory over William Jewell in the opener before holding on for a 7-6 win over Lindenwood in the nightcap.  

Game #1 - William Jewell

William Jewell held a 2-1 edge after the 1st inning, with SV's run coming off an RBI double from Blasia Moyler. Four runs came in the 3rd off RBI singles from Jackie Popko, Sabrina Sage and Shelby Misiak, along with Misiak scoring on an error. 

Two more came in the 4th and another in the 5th, rounding-out the game's scoring. Popko had a two-RBI single in the 4th while Sage scored on an error in the 5th inning.

The Cards got a 3-4 performance from Sarah Gersch, who had two doubles and scored three times from the lead-off spot. Popko had two hits with three runs driven-in while Moyler added a pair of hits with an RBI. Misiak and Sage each added a hit and RBI in the game one victory.

Julia Mundy picked up the victory in relief of starter Alyssa Muench. She entered the game in the 3rd inning and closed-out in the circle for the win. 

Game #2 - Lindenwood

Popko gave SVSU an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st with a solo shot but the Lions responded with two runs in the 4th and 5th innings to take a 4-1 edge.

A six-run 6th inning for the Cards, however, gave them the lead back at 7-4. Misiak had a two-RBI double, as did Sage. Julia Salisbury and Alexis Gills then each added an RBI single to round-out the team's scoring for the inning.

Lindenwood went for a pair of runs in the bottom of the 6th but that would conclude the game's scoring with SV taking the 7-6 victory.

Popko had three hits with the home run, one RBI and two runs scored. Misiak had two doubles in the contest with a pair of RBI. Salisbury had two hits with an RBI while Sage had a hit and two runs driven-in.

Emily Depew (1-0) picked up the victory in relief of starter Jaclyn Groves. Depew pitched 1.0 inning, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks. Kasey Bagelmann picked up her second save of the season, working a scoreless 1.2 innings to seal the deal.

The Cardinals round-out play at the Dome Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 22) when they face Winona State and Hillsdale. The first game will be at 7:00 p.m. ET and the second at 9:00 p.m. ET.
