UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Saginaw Valley Softball team split with Wayne State University on Sunday in the final regular season GLIAC doubleheader of the 2019 season. The Warriors claimed the opener by a 7-2 score before the Cardinals took the win in the nightcap, 9-4.
Game 1
Wayne State jumped out to a quick lead in the opener, going for five in the 1st and another in the 2nd to take a 6-0 lead. The Warriors tacked-on another in the 4th to make their lead 7-0.
The only two runs for the Cards came in the home half of the 4th inning when Aubree Mouthaan belted a home run to make the score 7-2.
That was all of the game's scoring there, as the Warriors finished-off the game with the victory.
Mouthaan had the team's only two RBI while Julia Salisbury had two hits for the Cardinals. Blasia Moyler and Jackie Popko had the other hits for SVSU.
Julia Mundy (7-7) took the loss in the start, allowing seven runs in the 4.0 innings with three walks.
Game 2
Saginaw Valley was first to strike in the second game, taking a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. Mouthaan pushed Sarah Gersch across on a fielder's choice RBI and Salisbury knocked a three-RBI triple that scored Shelby Misiak, Mouthaan and Moyler.
WSU made the score 4-3 in the top of the 3rd but SVSU responded with two in the 3rd and another in the 4th to make the score 7-3. Mouthaan and Misiak knocked solo home runs in the 3rd while Gersch had one of her own in the 4th.
The Warriors scored a run in the 5th to trim the SV lead to 7-4.
In the 6th inning, Alicia Kolacki and Moyler added RBI singles for the home team, putting the game at its eventual final score of 9-4 in SVSU's favor.
Salisbury had three RBI on her triple while Gersch had a three-hit game with a double and home run. Kolacki and Moyler had an RBI single and Mouthaan had a home run, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Meagan VerVaecke, Morgan Duda, Popko and Alexis Cerven all added one hit for the Cardinals as well.
Jaclyn Groves (5-3) picked up the victory in the start, working 5.0 innings while allowing four runs (3ER) on seven hits. She had one walk and struck-out two batters in the game.

The Cardinals have secured the No. 5 seed in the 2019 GLIAC Softball Tournament and SVSU will face No. 4 Northwood on Friday (May 3) at 10:00 a.m. at the Sports Force Parks in Sandusky, Ohio.
