Cardinals sweep Purdue Northwest in Friday action

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The SVSU Softball team hosted Purdue Northwest on Friday afternoon in a GLIAC doubleheader. The Cardinals claimed the opener by a 7-2 score before pulling ahead late in the nightcap to finish-off the sweep with a 5-4 victory. 

Game 1

SVSU claimed a 3-0 lead in the 1st, as Jackie Popko had an RBI on a fielder's choice, Shelby Misiak drove-in Popko and Alexis Cerven came across on an error. 

Another run came in the bottom of the 3rd when Aubree Mouthaan had a squeeze play that pushed Popko across the plate for a 4-0 edge. 

The Cardinals tacked-on another trio of runs in the 4th inning to take a 7-0 lead ove the Pride. Alicia Kolacki had an RBI single that scored Sarah Gersch and Blasia Moyler had a two-RBI double to plate Popko and Cerven. 

Purdue Northwest scored their only two runs of the game in the 6th inning but SVSU would close-out for the 7-2 win over the Pride.

Julia Mundy (7-6) worked the complete game in the circle for the victory. She allowed just two runs while scattering seven hits. She had four strikeouts in the game. 

Moyler had the only extra-base hit with a double and led with two RBI. Gersch had two hits, two runs and a pair of walks. Kolacki and Popko each had a hit and RBI, with Popko scoring three runs. Misiak and Becky Corbett had a hit, with Misiak having an RBI. Mouthaan added another RBI for Saginaw Valley. 

Game 2

After PNW took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 3rd, the Cards responded with four runs in the home half to take a 4-2 lead. After a Popko single and error in the field, Cerven scored and Corbett scored on the play as well. Moyler added an RBI double while Misiak had an RBI single for SV. 

The Pride knotted the score at 4-4 after scoring single runs in the 4th and 5th innings, respectively. 

Saginaw Valley responded with a run in the bottom of the 5th when Misiak ripped a single past the third baseman and allowed Moyler to score. That made the score 5-4 in SVSU's favor. 

Mundy entered the game pitching and would close-out the game with 2.0 scoreless innings on just two hits for her third save. Jaclyn Groves (4-3) got the win, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing four runs (3 ER) on seven hits. She walked two and had a pair of strikeouts. 

Misiak was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the nightcap. Popko and Moyler had a hit and RBI, with Moyler having another double. Meagan VerVaecke had the other hit for Saginaw Valley.
