SVSU splits at Wayne State after game two victory

DETROIT -- The Cardinal Softball team remained on the road on Thursday afternoon, playing at Wayne State University in another league doubleheader. Saginaw Valley dropped the opening game 4-0 before rebounding for a nice 7-4 victory in the second game.

The Cardinals are now 16-16 overall on the season and 8-10 in the GLIAC. Wayne State is 24-13 and 7-9 in league play.

Game 1

The Warriors scored a run in the home half of the 1st to take a 1-0 lead and added single runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings, respectively, to take a 4-0 edge over the Cardinals.

Saginaw Valley was able to get runners in scoring position in three innings, but it was not able to put any runs on the board and WSU claimed the opener by that same 4-0 score.

Shelby Misiak had two hits for the Cards in the game while Aubree Mouthaan, Meagan VerVaecke and Morgan Duda had the other hits. Mouthaan had the only extra-base hit with a double.

Mikayla Alexandrou (4-4) pitched the entire game, working 6.0 innings while allowing four runs on seven hits. She walked one batter.

Game 2

Wayne State took an early 3-0 lead in the second contest, scoring a pair of runs in the 2nd and another in the 3rd.

The Cardinals responded in the 4th and 5th, scoring three runs in the 4th and two in the 5th, taking a 5-3 edge. In the 4th, Misiak, Blasia Moyler and Alicia Kolacki had RBI while Misiak and VerVaecke had RBI in the 5th.

After the Warriors scored a single run in the 5th, SVSU responded again with two runs in the 6th when Mouthaan drove home two runs with a double. That made the score 7-4, which stayed the final after they held WSU scoreless the rest of the way.

Mouthaan had two more doubles in the nightcap, having two RBI with two runs scored. Alexis Cerven had two hits and scored three times in the game. Misiak had two hits with a pair of RBI as well. Moyler and Kolacki had a hit and RBI-apiece and Becky Corbett and Julia Salisbury added a base hit.

Hannah Atwell (4-2) worked the entire 7.0 innings, scattering nine hits and allowing four runs (3 ER) for the victory. She had zero walks and struck-out a season-high five batters.
