Cards take opener of doubleheader split at #19 Cedarville

DAYTON, Ohio -- Seeing its first action in 11 days, the Cardinal Softball team traveled to face regional opponent and No. 19 nationally-ranked Cedarville University on Wednesday (Feb. 13) at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. After posting a huge 7th inning in a 10-9 eight-inning victory in the opener, the Cardinals fell by a narrow 3-2 count in the second game to the Yellow Jackets.

Game 1

SVSU scored first when Meagan VerVaecke drilled an RBI double to score Julia Salisbury in the top of the 2nd, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets responded with three runs in the 4th and another pair in the 5th, taking a 5-1 lead over the visitors.

Another VerVaecke RBI came in the top of the 6th, this time with her ripping a single that pushed Katy Ratajczak across to make the count 5-2.

Cedarville tacked-on another run to give the home squad a four run cushion at 6-2 heading into the final inning.

That's where the Cardinals would post a big comeback, going for seven runs in the top of the 7th to grab the lead back with the score 9-6. Alicia Kolacki and Blasia Moyler had RBI singles while Savannah Oen had an RBI on a bases-loaded walk. Becky Corbett scored on a passed ball and Alex Roob delivered the big blow. She brought home three runs with a triple, putting the visitors with a nine-spot on the scoreboard.

The home team was not done, however, responding with a trio of runs with two outs, sending the game to the 8th inning knotted-up at 9-9.

There were two outs with Shelby Misiak on second base and Moyler came through with an RBI double, scoring Misiak for the 10-9 lead.

The Yellow Jackets couldn't respond in the home half and the Cards came away with the 10-9 extra-inning victory.

VerVaecke and Moyler each went 3-3 with a double, two RBI and a walk in the opener. Kolacki had a pair of hits with an RBI. Misiak added two hits and Roob had the big three-RBI triple for the Cardinals.

Mikayla Alexandrou (2-0) picked up the win in the circle, working 5.1 total innings while striking-out six batters.

Game 2

The home team jumped out front quickly for a 2-0 lead after a home run in the first inning of the contest.

Saginaw Valley got on the board itself in the 4th, using an Alexis Cerven squeeze to score Salisbury and make the score 2-1 in CU's favor.

In the bottom of the 5th, Cedarville added another score and would carry a 3-1 lead into the 7th inning.

With two outs, Misiak provided some hope for the Cardinals with a solo home run that made the count 3-2, but the score would stand there and the Yellow Jackets would salvage the split after the game two win.

Misiak had two hits with the solo shot and RBI for SVSU. Salisbury went 2-3 with a pair of doubles while Cerven had a hit and the other RBI for the visitors.

Julia Mundy (3-1) worked all 6.0 innings for the Cards, allowing three runs on seven hits, striking-out four batters.
