Softball Splits on Day One at GLIAC Tournament

SANDUSKY, Ohio -- The Cardinal Softball team posted a split on the opening day of the 2018 GLIAC Tournament, hosted at the Sports Force Parks in Sandusky, Ohio. Saginaw Valley came from six runs behind to post a 10-6 win over Ashland in the first game before dropping a tight 5-4 decision to Davenport in eight innings in game two.

Game 1 - Ashland

The Eagles scored four runs in the 1st and a pair in the 2nd to take an early 6-0 edge over the Cardinals.

SVSU responded in a big way in the 4th, however, delivering seven runs on seven hits, working its way out to a 7-6 lead. Maddy Burgess and Danielle Hamilton each had two RBI in the frame while Meredith Rousse, Aubree Mouthaan and Evy Lobdell added a run driven-in.

Lauren Bachert would have a hand in three more runs scored by SV, as the Cards pushed the lead to 10-6 in the 5th inning. She drove-in Burgess and pinch-runner Alicia Kolacki with a ground rule double. She would then come around to score after a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch.

That was all the cushion Saginaw Valley needed as the team sealed the 10-6 win.

Kasey Bagelmann (3-3) got the win after pitching 5.0 innings of scoreless relief. She scattered five hits and struck-out four.

Lobdell was a perfect 4-4 with a triple and RBI. Burgess had three hits in as many at-bats with two RBI and two runs. Hamilton was 2-3 with a run and two RBI. Bachert (2 RBI) and Rousse (1 RBI) each had a double for SVSU.

Game 2 - Davenport

The Panthers scored a pair of runs to grab the 2-0 edge in the bottom of the 2nd inning.

Saginaw Valley responded with two runs of its own in the top of the 4th when Becky Corbett had a ground rule double to push Courtney Reeves and Rousse across for the 2-2 tie.

An RBI double in the home half of the 5th inning would give Davenport a 3-2 edge.

That was soon matched by SVSU again, as the top of the 6th saw Lobdell drive home Mouthaan to tie the game at 3-3.

The score held true through seven innings and the Cards came up to bat in the 8th. Reeves drilled a one-out pitch over the center field fence, giving SVSU a 4-3 lead with her 28th career long ball, which matches the program all-time record. That one run lead remained with Davenport coming to bat.

Davenport put the pressure on in the bottom of the 8th and would eventually get the tying run on a sac fly and the winning run on an RBI single, taking the win in dramatic fashion, 5-4.

Corbett was 2-2 with a pair of RBI and a double. Hamiilton went 2-4 in the second contest. Mouthaan ripped a double off the left center wall and scored a run. Reeves had the home run for the Cards while Lobdell had a hit and RBI.

Anna Conard got the start, working 7 + innings in the circle. She allowed four runs on seven hits with four walks and a strikeout. Bagelmann (3-4) took the loss in relief, tossing 0.2 innings and allowing one run on a pair of hits.
