Cardinals Claim Second Game of DH at Wayne State

DETROIT — The SVSU Softball team began its three-day road trip with a stop at Wayne State University's Gary L. Bryce Field Thursday (Apr. 26) afternoon. The Warriors seventh inning comeback swiped the victory from the Cardinals 3-2 in game one of the doubleheader but Saginaw Valley rebounded nicely in the nightcap for an 8-0 win.

Saginaw Valley evens back out with a 21-21 overall record on the year, 12-12 in the GLIAC, while WSU heads to a mark of 23-20 on the year, 8-14 in conference play.

Game 1

The Cardinals came in hot in game one, getting a double to start off the contest from lead-off hitter Lauren Bachert. With the RBI single from Danielle Hamilton to follow, Bachert scored for Saginaw Valley State to lead 1-0 over Wayne State.

Starting pitcher for the Cardinals, Mikayla Alexandrou, posted a 1-2-3 inning, keeping Saginaw Valley at a 1-0 lead at the completion of the first inning.

Shortstop Aubree Mouthaan sent her first swing of the day as a double to left center, although, the closest she would get to scoring is third on a passed ball in the top of the second. SVSU held onto a 1-0 lead heading into the third.

In the top of the fourth, Mouthaan doubled again, adding the Cardinals fifth hit of the day. Maddy Burgess then singled to the WSU shortstop and advanced to second on the throw, which plated Mouthaan for Saginaw Valley State to lead 2-0 over the Warriors.

The Warriors remained scoreless until an RBI single in the fifth cut SVSU's lead in half at 2-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors went on to build a solid scoring threat and had a two-run single down the left field line, taking the victory 3-2 over the Cardinals.

SVSU ended game one of the doubleheader with two runs on seven hits and no errors. Wayne State went three runs on six hits with two errors.

Alexandrou (L, 7-7) took the loss for the Cardinals, tossing a complete game, striking out five, walking three and allowed three runs.

Mouthaan had a pair of doubles in the opener while Burgess added a pair of hits as well. Bachert had a double while Hamilton had a hit and the team's only RBI. Hamilton and Courtney Reeves each recorded a stolen base as well.

Game 2

The teams were scoreless after the first two innings of play until the lead-off hitter in the top of the third for the Cardinals, Mouthaan, hit a solo shot to left field to go up 1-0 over the Warriors.

The next strike for the Cardinals came in the top of the fourth, where Courtney Reeves homered to left center, scoring Meredith Rousse as well, sending SVSU to a 3-0 lead. That long ball gives Reeves 27 for her career, just one shy of matching the program's all-time mark.

Mouthaan then responded with a RBI single, plating Evy Lobdell to go up 4-0 over the Warriors. Burgess' sac bunt that went on to score Alexis Cerven, rounded out the runs for the inning. Saginaw Valley State headed into the bottom of the fourth leading 5-0 over Wayne State.

The runs kept coming in for SVSU as Lauren Bachert's RBI single plated Mouthaan to push the team to a 6-nil lead over the Warriors.

Rousse belted her seventh homer of the season in the top of the seventh, to take the lead 7-0. SVSU Softball went on to score the eighth and final run of the night where Alex Roob scored on a wild pitch.

Kasey Bagelmann claimed her first win of the 2018 season, posting four strikeouts, two walks, and allowed no runs.

Mouthaan went 2-3 with a home run, two runs and a pair of RBI. Meredith Rousse had a home run in the contest, adding two runs scored. Reeves had the home run with two RBI while Bachert had a hit and RBI. Burgess added an RBI for SVSU as well.

Saginaw Valley ended the contest with eight runs off 10 hits with one error. Wayne State had five hits, no runs and no errors.
