Cardinals Bounce Back for Second Game Win at Davenport

Cardinals Bounce Back for Second Game Win at Davenport

CALEDONIA -- In a Friday doubleheader at Davenport University, the Cardinal Softball squad responded with a nice second game victory over the Panthers to salvage a split at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Caledonia, Michigan.

Game 1

The Cardinals were held down for the majority of the game by Davenport's Mallory Teunissen, who faced just one batter over the minimum through the six-inning contest, allowing a single hit and posting 10 strikeouts.

The Panthers scored one run each in the bottom of the 1st, 4th and 5th innings to take the 3-0 lead. Davenport added five more in the bottom of the 6th, ending the game early with an 8-0 victory after taking advantage of a Cardinal mistake.

Danielle Hamilton was the only Cardinal to reach base in the game with a 6th inning single. She added a stolen base as well.

Mikayla Alexandrou (4-4) dropped the decision in the circle, working 5.1 innings. She allowed four earned runs, seven hits and struck-out four batters with two walks.

Game 2

The script would be flipped in game two, as Saginaw Valley matched a season-high with 15 hits and starter Anna Conard (8-2) limited the Panthers to just a pair of hits en route to a 9-0 shutout in six innings.

SV scored in every single inning and every starter registered at least one hit in the win. The visitors held a 2-0 lead after scoring single runs in the top of the 1st and 2nd, respectively. The first came via a Courtney Reeves RBI single that plated Lauren Bachert, who led-off the game with a double. The 2nd frame saw Hamilton rip an RBI single that pushed Becky Corbett across.

An Aubree Mouthaan 3rd inning double down the right field line that just escaped the reach of the right fielder scored Evy Lobdell and Meredith Rousse to make the lead 4-0.

A Rousse RBI single in the 4th scored Maddy Burgess and the 5th inning had Lobdell scoring on a throwing error, extending the lead out to 6-0.

The top of the 6th would finish the game's scoring, as a Julia RBI infield single scored Bachert, Lobdell followed with an RBI single that plated Alexis Cerven and Mouthaan added another RBI double that scored Miller. That made the game 9-0 in SVSU's favor, which is where the score remained after Conard retired the Panthers in the bottom half.

Mouthaan went 3-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI in the nightcap. Bachert added three hits in four trips with a double and two runs scored. Miller went 2-3 with an RBI and run scored. Lobdell was 2-4 with an RBI and scored twice. Reeves, Rousse and Hamilton all had a hit and RBI as well while Burgess had a double. Corbett had a hit, run and two stolen bases as well.
