Cardinals Fall in Midwest Regional Final to Wayne State

Cardinals Fall in Midwest Regional Final to Wayne State

DETROIT, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University softball team saw its 2010 season come to an end at the Midwest Regional, falling to Wayne State Sunday (May 16), 5-0.

Senior Kari Bowlby (Elkhart, Ind./Central HS) got the start in circle for the Cardinals after an impressive game one win against the Warriors.  She was able to retire Wayne State for the first time this weekend without giving up a run in the first inning.  The Cardinals would go down in order in the bottom of the first.

Wayne State would get a runner to second base with just one out in the second inning, but the Cardinals would get out of the inning with no damage.  Angela Kaiser (Waterford, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes HS) would reach base on a one out single to left center, but was unable to advance past second.

The Warriors would strike hard in the top of the third with four runs on four hits to take a 4-0 advantage. Nicole Bigelow (Grandville, Mich.) would reach and advance to second on a throwing error by the short stop.  She advance to third on a passed ball but once again, but SVSU was unable to push a run across the plate.

Wayne State added another run in the fifth to go up 5-0, before Lauren Memmer (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) came in and got the Warriors to ground into an inning ending double play.  The Cardinals were unable to use the momentum, however, as they went down in order in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Saginaw Valley was able to retire the Warriors in order in the top of the fifth inning.  Shannon McLaughlin (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet HS) led off the bottom half of the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Pinch hitter Kalie Burdick (Milford, Mich.) reached first base via a Casey Haines beam ball, but Ashley Coffin (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson HS) would be unable to drive the runs in for the Cardinals.

Memmer was able to get out of a jam with a runner on third in the top of the sixth inning on a ground-out back to the circle.  Ashley Jordan (Freeland, Mich.) rolled a single through the left side and would advance to second on a Jillian Peterson (Freeland, Mich.) single up the middle.  A Kaiser groundout would advance the runners to second and third, but McLaughlin would go down on strikes to end the Cardinal threat.

Wayne State and Saginaw Valley would both go down in order in the seventh inning.

Saginaw Valley finished the season with a 30-16 record overall, while Wayne State improves to 50-11 overall on the season and advances to the Midwest Super Regional against Ashland next weekend.
