#19 Cardinals and Wildcats play to 2-2 draw

MARQUETTE -- The Cardinal Men's Soccer team, ranked No. 19 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, traveled to Northern Michigan University on Friday (Oct. 12) for a key GLIAC matchup.

Saginaw Valley remains atop the league standings currently with their 8-1-4 overall record and 6-1-2 mark in the GLIAC. The Wildcats are now 6-3-3 and 3-2-3 in league play.

The Wildcats got on the board first with an early goal at the 6' mark by Sam Popp off a corner kick to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

Saginaw Valley responded at the 17' point, as Michael Shaikly scored a goal to pull the match even at 1-1.

After that 1-1 score held throughout the opening half, Azaad Liadi gave the visitors a 2-1 edge at the 70' mark when he knocked-in a rebound off his own shot.

Just over four minutes later, NMU's Popp scored his second goal of the contest at the 74' point to tie the game back up quickly at 2-2.

That score held true through regulation and forced bonus soccer for the two teams in the league contest.

Despite several scoring opportunities for both teams for the remainder, neither team found the back of the net and the match ended with the 2-2 tie.
