Saginaw Valley State University Interim Director of Athletics Angela Pohl announced Matt Pumford as the Interim Head Coach for the men's and women's golf teams for the 2023 Spring Season.

"We are in great shape with Coach Pumford leading our men's and women's golf programs this Spring," said Pohl. "His passion for teaching, golf acumen, and student-centered focus will steady our program and set them up for success.   With assistance from retired head coach, Joe Vogl for golf operations, and Sam Black, assistant golf professional at Kingsley Golf Club for player development, we are well positioned to provide the very best experience for our student-athletes in the interim."

Pumford served as the assistant coach for the SVSU golf teams since 2019 before being promoted to interim head coach. He is also currently the head coach of the Freeland High School girls' golf team. During his tenure with the Falcons, Pumford was named the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division III coach of the year in 2018.

"As the sport administrator for the Men's and Women's golf program, I am very excited to bring back Matt Pumford for this role," stated Interim Associate Athletic Director of Facilities and Events Brad Barlog. "Matt has a lot of experience with the team and student-athletes already as being the former Assistant Coach, and it will be a seamless transition for both teams. In addition to also having Sam Black as an Interim Assistant Golf Coach and Joe Vogl as the Administrative Coach, I am confident that our Men's and Women's golf programs will not skip a beat."

As an athlete, Pumford competed collegiately at Michigan State University from 1994-1999 where he was awarded the 1999 leadership award, 1997 and 1998 most improved, and was the team captain in his final two seasons of play. During his senior season, Pumford held an average of 73.95.

During his career as a Spartan, Pumford was the Saginaw District Golf Champion in 1997 and 1999. He won that championship four more times (2012, 2013, 2014, and 2018) after his college career was finished. Pumford's other achievements in the sport of golf include the 2004 Publinx Player of the Year, Michigan AM "sweet 16" qualification in 2004 and the runner-up in Michigan match play that same year.

"I'm really excited to be working with such amazing student-athletes," said Pumford. "We are going to continue to work hard inside and outside the classroom to represent SVSU to the highest level. I'm looking forward to reconnecting and continuing to build great relationships with our athletes' friends, families, and our tremendous alumni. SVSU has always been a big part of our family and I'm excited to have this opportunity!"

Pumford grew up in Chesaning, Michigan, and currently lives in Freeland with his wife Lacosta, and three daughters, Olivia, Grace, and Averie.
