UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Saginaw Valley State University hosted the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday (Feb. 1) afternoon in a GLIAC Men's Basketball matchup. The Cardinals had a big second half, overcoming a five point halftime deficit to outscore the Huskies 45-36 in the second half to claim a 73-69 win.
Saginaw Valley improves to 14-7 overall on the season and 8-5 in the GLIAC. Michigan Tech is now 14-7 and 8-5 in the league.
The Huskies led by five points at the half, taking a 33-28 lead into the break. Myles Belyeu had 14 points to lead the way for the Cards through 20 minutes while Malik Ellison added seven.
SVSU would take a lead in the second but the visitors ended up building a 13 point lead with 8:28 to play with the score 54-41.
The Cards worked their way back and would knot the score at 63-63 with 1:51 to go and take a 66-63 edge with 1:16 to play in the game when Darnell Hoskins Jr. hit a triple.
That lead would increase to 68-63 with another pair of Ellison free throws with 43 seconds left. James Toohey would make the count 70-63 with just 17 seconds left with two more free throws for the home team.
Michigan Tech hit a pair of triples to trim the deficit to 71-69, as Hoskins added that point for SV with a free throw.
With the Huskies forced foul again with three seconds left, Ellison sealed the victory with another two free throws to make the score 73-69.
Inside the Boxscore
- Ellison had a game-high 28 points for the Cards, adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals. He earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors for Saginaw Valley.
- Belyeu added 25 points and seven boards with two steals and an assist.
- Hoskins tacked-on 11 points with a pair of assists and two steals.
- Toohey had a team-high eight rebounds for the Cardinals.
