Cardinals Fall to Lakers in GLIAC Action, 85-78

ALLENDALE, Mich. — In Thursday's GLIAC action across the state on the campus of Grand Valley State University, the SVSU Men's Basketball team fell in a close contest, 85-78. The Cardinals head to a 5-9 overall record and 2-5 in the GLIAC, while the Lakers improve to 10-5, 4-3 in conference play. 

The Battle of the Valleys was in full swing in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena, with both teams neck and neck for the first half of the game. The Cardinals were led by junior guard Darnell Hoskins Jr. who earned 11 points and three assists in his 19 minutes of play and sophomore guard James Toohey who added the team-high three boards and 10 points. 

Freshman Jack Roberts came out strong in his 12 minutes, racking up eight points off the bench, only missing a total of one shot in the half. 

Grand Valley headed into the locker room with a slight lead of 46-40 over Saginaw Valley at the halftime break. 

The final half of action was even closer than the first 20 minutes, with freshman Myles Belyeu becoming a key player for the Cards, posting 10 points and two boards. Off the bench, Lachlan Anthony added 11 points and two boards, going 3-of-4 in triples. 

Even with the battle from the Cardinals to remain in the game, they were unable to ever pull ahead of the Lakers, leaving the team to a loss, 85-78. 

Inside the Box Score: 

  • Toohey posted 13 points and a team-high of eight rebounds, earning himself the "Meijer" Player of the Game honors. 
  • Belyeu recorded 13 points as well, with one assist and two boards. 
  • Hoskins had the team-high 15 points. 
  • Anthony led the bench scoring with 11 points and three boards. 
  • Fred John Jr. had the team-high of five assists for the Cardinals. He added five rebounds and eight points.
