BAY CITY -- The Saginaw Valley State University Men's Basketball team has been picked to finish third in the GLIAC South Division in voting conducted by the league's head coaches for the 2017-18 Preseason Coaches' Poll.

The Cardinals garnered 46 points, finishing 12 behind runner-up Wayne State, which had 58 and four first-place votes. Ashland notched 63 points and eight first-place votes to be tabbed as the South Divsion favorite. Ferris State was picked to win the North Division, totaling 66 points and 11 first-place nods.

2017-18 Saginaw Valley State Preview

The Cardinals look to bounce back from a 2016-17 campaign in which the team posted an overall record of 17-11 and missed out on the league's postseason tournament after a 10-11 GLIAC record. SVSU's Randy Baruth returns to lead the team for his sixth season, having led the team to at least 17 victories the past three seasons.

This year's roster will feature many fresh faces, as just four players return that saw action last season and 10 new players join the Cardinals. Five seniors depart from last year's squad, including three-time All-GLIAC performer and second all-time leading scorer in C.J. Turnage. Returning letter winners from last season are guards Malik Garner, Mike Wells Jr., Richie Roberts and Jake Daniels.

Saginaw Valley opens the season at the annual GLIAC / GLVC Challenge, facing Bellarmine at Indianapolis, which made a run to the national semifinals in 2017, and Indianapolis. GLIAC play begins on November 30 for the Cards, as they make their annual trip to the U.P. to face Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan.
