  • Matt Black and Desi Mayner Selected for 2009 Cactus Bowl

    KINGSVILLE, Tx. - Offensive lineman Desi Mayner (Gaines, Mich./Linden HS) and Matt Black (Toronto, Ont./Northern SS) have been selected to represent Saginaw Valley State University in the 2009 Valero Cactus Bowl, which will be played on January 9 at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

    St. Paul, Minn. - Junior linebacker John Jacobs (Prudenville, Mich./Midland Dow), who helped lead the Cardinals to a 7-3 record this season, has been named Daktronics Second Team All-American.
  • Black, Mayner Play in East Coast Bowl 27-0 Victory

    PETERSBURG, VA. - Two seniors from Saginaw Valley’s football team represented the Cardinals in the eighth annual East Coast Bowl in Petersburg, Va. Offensive center, Desi Mayner (Gaines, Mich. / Linden HS) and defensive back, Matt Black (Toronto, Ont. / Northern SS) both played for the South team, helping to defeat the North, 27-0; the first shutout in the history of the East Coast Bowl.
  • 12 Cardinals Named to All-GLIAC Football Teams for 2008

    BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University had 12 members of its football team selected to All-GLIAC teams for their play on the field during the 2008 season. The Cardinals finished the season 7-3 overall and 7-3 in the GLIAC and in a tie for third place in the conference.

    UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The SVSU football team closed out the 2008 home football season in fashion with a 40-23 win over GLIAC foe Michigan Tech. The Cardinals put up 434 yards of total offense on the day, including 224 yards on the ground.

    Due to this Saturday’s unusual start time (4 p.m.) and a Saginaw Spirit game that same evening, the SVSU football broadcast will be carried on WSGW-AM 790 on Saturday, Oct. 4. All subsequent games will air on WTKQ-FM 100.5.
  • SVSU to Host "Take a Kid to a Game Day" and "Community Youth Day" This weekend

    UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University invites all area children to attend their upcoming football game at noon, Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, against the Tiffin University Dragons. Children have the opportunity to experience a college football game as the Cardinals hosts NCAA Football’s eleventh annual “Take A Kid to the Game” (TAKG) program presented by Coca-Cola and sponsored by other Corporate Champions, AT&T and Pontiac. Kids, ages fourteen and younger, will receive a free ticket with the purchase of a full-priced adult ticket, to watch the Cardinals at Wickes Field. In conjunction with Take a Kid to the Game Day, SVSU will host a free basketball Community Youth Day event in which children in grades K-8 will have a chance to learn skills from basketball coaches Frankie Smith and Shannon Baugh, and athletes from their respective teams at 10:30 a.m. in O’Neill Arena.

The victory marked the first win for SVSU in the Jim Collins era and the 17th straight win over the Warriors.

  • Cardinals to Unveil New Look in 2008

    UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - A new coach, staff, and defense will not be the only new additions walking the sidelines for the Cardinals this fall. SVSU unveiled their new Nike uniforms that they will wear during the 2008 season. The new look will hit the field for action on September 6 when the Cardinals host Wayne State in the season opener at noon in Wickes Stadium.
