Cardinals Fall to Parkside to Split the Series

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team split its four-game series against Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday afternoon, falling in the finale. The Cardinals (27-18, 9-11 GLIAC) dropped a 6-0 decision to the Rangers (28-17, 10-10 GLIAC), falling one game behind UWP in the GLIAC standings with four games remaining.

Ryan McCartan led the Cardinals at the plate, going 2-for-4. Mitchell Walters, Zane Wilson, Aaron Bess, Ryan Jarvis, and Ethan Scheib each recorded a hit as well. Brady Baalaer (L, 0-3) started on the mound, pitching four innings and allowing two unearned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two. Nathan Masar came on in relief, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing four runs on four hits and five walks while striking out seven. Ben Kochany recorded the final two outs of the eighth inning.

Parkside opened the scoring in the third inning with a two-run double, while Saginaw Valley left a runner in scoring position in both the first and second innings. In the top of the fifth, McCartan and Walters singled with one out to put two on. After a popout, Buck Snabes launched a deep drive to left field, but Peter Fusek made a spectacular catch, colliding with the short fence and flipping over the wall to rob Snabes of a go-ahead home run. SVSU got runners into scoring position in three of the final four innings but was unable to push across a run.

UWP added insurance runs in the sixth with an RBI single and three more in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single, an RBI walk, and an RBI fielder's choice to complete the scoring. The Rangers took the final two games of the series to force a weekend split.
