Baseball picks up nightcap victory over Trevecca in Sunday split

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Cardinal Baseball team wrapped-up play in Nashville on Sunday (Mar. 1) with games versus Lewis University and Trevecca Nazarene University. Saginaw Valley dropped the first one to the Flyers by a score of 7-4 before bouncing back for an 8-5 win over the Trojans in the nightcap. 

Game #1 - Lewis

The Cards got a run in the top of the 4th when Jordan Klapko had an RBI single to score Martin Money to knot the score at 1-1.

After the Flyers scored three runs to take a 4-1 edge, SV added a run in the 6th as Klapko put the team on the board once more with a solo home run. 

Austin Koin had a two-run home run in the 8th, but Lewis ended up closing-out for the 7-4 victory in the end.

Klapko had two hits and two RBI and Joshua Riggs added two base knocks as well. Koin had the home run, two RBI and walked twice. 

Hunter Merillat (1-1) took the loss in the start. He pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits. He walked four and had eight strikeouts. Matt Montroy allowed two runs in 2.1 innings of work and Derek Slocum allowed one in a single inning.

Game #2 - Trevecca Nazarene

In the nightcap, the game was knotted at 4-4 through five innings before the Cards added another four runs in the 6th frame to take an 8-4 edge.

The Trojans scored a single run in the bottom of the 7th, but that was all the scoring for the game and the visiting Cardinals would prevail with an 8-5 win. 

Tucker Roe, Collin Winters, Colin Cornwell and Andrew Burke had RBI for the Cardinals in their first four runs. In the 6th inning, Cornwell was walked home, as was Riggs for the first two runs of the inning. Anthony Kania then had a two-RBI single that pushed Roe and Money across.

Christopher Schmees (1-0) picked up his first victory, tossing 6.0 innings of relief. He allowed four runs on six hits with eight strikeouts. Kyle Henigan got the start and allowed six hits, one run and had two strikeouts and a walk through three innings.
