Flyers defeat Cardinals in Saturday regional action

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Saginaw Valley State University Baseball team faced the Lewis University Flyers on Saturday (Feb. 29) in another regional game for the Cardinals. Despite holding a 2-1 lead through three innings, the Cards couldn't overcome eight runs from Lewis after and the Flyers would win the game, 9-3. 

Lewis improves to 3-2 overall on the season while Saginaw Valley drops just its second game of the 2020 season and is now 5-2 overall. 

SVSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning when it executed a double-steal, sending Brandon Scheurer across the plate after he doubled and moved to third on a Thomas Loftus bunt single. 

After the Flyers knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the 3rd, Collin Winters ripped an RBI triple that pushed Loftus across to give SV the 2-1 edge. 

Lewis added a single run in the 5th and went for four runs in the 6th, giving them a 6-2 lead. They added another trio of runs in the 8th to make the count 9-2. 

The final run of the contest came in the home half of the 8th inning when Todd Paperd had an RBI single up the middle that scored Joshua Riggs. That put the score at 9-3, as that is where the final score remained. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Loftus had two hits in the game with a run.
  • Riggs went 2-for-4 in the game with a double, walk and run scored.
  • Paperd ripped two hits as well, adding an RBI.
  • Winters had the RBI triple for the Cards.
  • Scheurer's hit was a double, joining Riggs and Winters as the Cardinals with an extra-base hit. 

On the Mound

  • Jason Clark got the start and worked 5.0 innings, allowing two runs (1 ER) on six hits, striking out six and walking five.
  • Eric Fritz (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on one hit and two walks with a strikeout.
  • Dylan Golden had 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and Nolan Hamilton had another inning of scoreless ball. Golden had two strikeouts and Hamilton one.

SVSU faces Lewis once again on Sunday (Mar. 1) in a 1:30 pm ET game. The Cardinals will then face Trevecca Nazarene after to round-out play in Nashville.
