Cardinals fall to Timberwolves at Dow Diamond

MIDLAND -- The Cardinal Baseball team hosted Northwood University on Tuesday (Apr. 16) night at Dow Diamond, facing the Timberwolves in a non-conference matchup. In what was a high-scoring, back-and-forth contest, Northwood snuck away with a one run victory in the end, 14-13.

SVSU got on the board first with a run in the 1st inning and, despite seeing Northwood score six straight runs to lead 6-1 after 5 innings, came back to take the lead again.

The Cardinals had three runs in the home half of the 5th and exploded for seven in the 6th, taking an 11-6 lead over the Timberwolves.

Northwood had its second five-run inning of the game, however, in the 7th and tied things up at 11-11.

A single run in the 8th and two more in the 9th for the T-Wolves gave them a 14-11 edge heading into the last of the 9th inning.

Saginaw Valley would not go away, however. The Cards put the pressure on in their last at-bat, scoring two runs to pull within a single run at 14-13 with two outs. They could not get the tying run across though and would eventually fall by that same 14-13 score.

Derrek Clyde led the way offensively, going 3-for-5 with a double, triple, three RBI and three runs scored. He reached base on a walk as well. Jordan Swiss added three hits of his own, scoring twice and driving-in a run. Craig Wilson had two hits with a pair of RBI, a walk and run scored. Collin Winters had a three-RBI triple in the contest while Joshua Riggs had his team-leading sixth home run of the season. Adam Turner added an RBI and a base hit for SVSU.

Ian Janssen got the start on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings. He gave up six runs (3 ER) on eight hits, walking three and posting four strikeouts. John Fantauzzo (2-2) took the loss in relief, working 1.2 innings and allowing three runs (2 ER) on three hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
