Cardinals Fall in Twinbill at Grand Valley State

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The SVSU Baseball team continued their series against Grand Valley State Saturday (Apr. 28) afternoon, falling in game two 6-5 and game three, 7-4. The Cardinals head to a 20-23 overall record, and 5-17 conference record. The Lakers __ to _-_ in the GLIAC and __-__ overall. 

Game One: GVSU 6 - SVSU 5

The Cardinals started out with a bang,  after Derrek Clyde doubled to start off the contest, Jordan Swiss responded with a RBI single, advanced to second on the throw, scoring Clyde, unearned.

Fitzgibbon continued to swing for SVSU, reaching on an error by Laker Shortstop, plating Swiss. This was the second GVSU error on the day. 

Grand Valley responded in th bottom of the first, sending a two-run homer over the right field fence. They also scored two more runs to end the first inning leading 4-2 over Saginaw Valley. 

In the top of the fourth, Andrew Burke grounded out to Grand Valley's second baseman, but ended up earning an RBI for scoring Quincy Jones. Heading into the bottom of the fourth, SVSU trailed 4-3 to GVSU. 

The Lakers added their second home run on the day in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead back out to 6-4. 

Saginaw Valley faught to even the score in the top of the seventh inning, but the one run was not enough. The Cardinals fall in game one of the doubleheader, 6-5, to the Lakers. 

The series now evened up 1-1 heading into game three. 

Game One: GVSU 7 - SVSU 4

To start out the first inning, Jones doubled to left center with bases loaded scoring Winters and Swiss. The Lakers responded with one run to cut the lead to one (2-1) heading into the second inning. 

Both teams had a quiet next few innings, until SVSU's Eding sending a double down the right field line scoring Paperd. Swiss then reached on an error by Laker first baseman, plating Eding, unearned. The Cardinals led 4-1 at the completion of the top of the fourth. 

Grand Valley notched four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take back the lead 5-4 heading into the fifth inning. 

The Lakers added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to finalize the count 7-5. GVSU took the win to sweep the doubleheader and to go up 2-1 in the series.

Alex Millhisler (L, 1-6) took the lose for Saginaw Valley with 4.1 innings pitched, striking out two. 

Jake Mason (W, 1-1) earned his first win, with 3.1 innings pitched with two strikeouts.
