Cardinals Fall in Series Finale to the Warriors, 10-8

DETROIT — Saginaw Valley State Baseball finished their four-game-series with Wayne State on Sunday (Apr. 22) falling 10-8 in the solo nine-inning contest. WSU heads to 20-16, 10-9 GLIAC, while SVSU falls to 19-21, 4-15 in conference play. 

Wayne State led the scoreboard after the first complete inning, 1-0, against the Cardinals. 

In the bottom of the second, Jon Quinlan was walked, RBI, sending Adam Fitzgibbon home to tie the score. Andrew Burke then was walked, scoring Dean Marais. Also, Derrek Clyde reached on a fielder's choice, RBI notching Jordan Swiss around the plate. 

Lastly, Clyde stole second, scoring Quinlan, to lead the Warriors, 4-1, at the end of the second inning. 

WSU scored on a passed ball in the top of the third to cut the lead in half, 4-2. 

SVSU responded in the bottom of the third when Marais RBI double to left field, scoring Fitzgibbon and Quincy Jones, to push the lead to 6-2. 

Saginaw Valley kept the fourth quiet for the Warriors. In the bottom of the fourth, Quincy Jones's RBI double to left center scored Collin Winters, unearned, to push the lead to five (7-2). 

Between the fifth and seventh inning, Wayne State knocked out eight to the Cardinals zero runs, to take back the lead 10-7. 

SVSU worked hard to battle back in the eighth after Mason Schwellenbach's sac fly RBI scored Swiss. This one run inning secured the final count for the teams with SVSU losing the contest, 10-8 to WSU. 

Brandon Wise pitched five innings, striking out three and walking two batters. 

Grant Jebbia (L, 0-2) took the loss, walking one and allowing three earned runs overall. 

Eric Fritz worked one inning, striking out two and only allowed two hits. 

Caleb Somerville pitched one inning with one strikeout, one walk and one earned run. 

Jacob Crossan finished out the staff for the Cardinals, pitching two innings, with no earned runs and one strikeout.

Saginaw Valley will head to Allendale, Mich., to play the Lakers of Grand Valley State in a four-game-series starting on Friday at 4 p.m.
