Cardinals Fall in Twinbill at Purdue Northwest

HAMMOND, Ind. — The SVSU Baseball team fell in Friday's (Apr. 13) opening series doubleheader against Purdue Northwest. The Cardinals fell in a close game one, 7-5, while the Pride went to shutout SVSU 3-0 in game two. 

SVSU now heads to 19-16 overall record, 4-10 in the GLIAC, while PNW heads to 5-9 in conference, 12-13 overall. 

Game One: PNW 7 - SVSU 5

The Pride opened up the series with a solo run to go up 1-0 over the Cardinals in the first inning. 

With a quiet next three innings, SV's Craig Wilson reached first on a fielding error by PNW's second baseman, scoring Griffin Green, to tie up the score 1-1. Andrew Burke's RBI sent Adam Fitzgibbon around the plate to take their only lead of the contest, 2-1, at the end of the fourth inning. 

Between the fifth and sixth innings, the Pride added six runs to go up 7-2 over Saginaw Valley. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Burke was at it again, sending a single down the left field line, scoring Fitzgibbon, to trail by four. 

To cut the PNW lead by three, Griffin Green reached on a fielder's choice, RBI, plating Gerrit EdingQuincy Jones followed behind with an RBI single up the middle. Dean Marais scored to finalize the count at 7-5. 

Mason Schwellenbach (L, 3-4) took the loss for the Cardinals, striking out three batters in five innings pitched. 

Jimmy Skiff (W, 3-2) earned the win for the Pride, with four strikeouts in 27 batters faced. 

Game Two: PNW 3 - SVSU 0

The Pride notched two runs in the top of the third, to go up 2-0 over the Cardinals. The final score happened in the fifth for PNW, to take the win 3-0 over Saginaw Valley State. 

The Cardinals notched six hits in the doubleheader and was walked three times. Purdue Northwest added nine hits and was only walked once. 

Alex Millhisler (L, 1-5) ended with his fifth loss after working sixth innings, striking out six PNW batters. He walked only a solo batter.

Purdue Northwest's Kyle Flessner (W, 2-2) took the win with no strikeouts, three walks, and six hits allowed. 

Up Next...

The Cardinals will face the Pride in game three of the series Saturday (Apr. 14) afternoon. PNW currently leads the series, 2-0 over SVSU. The first pitch of the nine inning game is set to begin at 1 p.m., weather permitting.
