Cardinals Split Twinbill Against Panthers

UNIVERSITY CENTER — Saginaw Valley State University Baseball team split the Davenport doubleheader Friday (Mar. 30) afternoon. The Cardinals took the game one victory, 6-2, followed by a Panther 7-2 win. SVSU is currently leading the series 2-1 heading into tomorrow's finale matchup. 

Game One SVSU-6, DU-2 

To start off the first inning, Jordan Swiss grounded out to the Davenport shortstop scoring Craig Wilson, unearned. Saginaw Valley took the lead 1-0 over the Panthers. 

With a scoreless next inning for both teams, Swiss came out in the bottom of the third and had a RBI triple to center field, plating Adam Fitzgibbon and Gerrit Eding. The Cardinals headed to a 3-nil score after the completion of the third. 

In the bottom of fourth, Eding tripled to right center to score Todd Paperd and take a 4-0 lead against the Panthers. 

Paperd had a RBI singled down the right field line to start off the bottom of the sixth. Collin Winters scored, unearned, to take the Cardinals to their best conference start on the year, 5-0. 

To finish off the count for the Cardinals in game one of the doubleheader, Derrek Clyde notched an RBI single to right field, scoring SVSU catcher Paperd. 

Davenport tried to hang on in the top of the seventh, but the two-run homer would not be able to do the trick. Saginaw Valley went on to win game one of the DH, 6-2, and headed to a 2-0 lead in the series.

Mason Schwellenbach (3-3) took the win for the Cardinals, working six innings, notching nine strikeouts and allowing only three hits, none of which were earned. 

Grant Jebbia closed for the Cardinals, allowing only two hits. 

Game Two DU-7, SVSU-2

With a RBI single from Davenport to start off the top of the first,  SVSU trailed early on behind the Panthers. 

Both teams remained quiet in the next four innings before Craig Wilson had an RBI singled through the left side, scoring teammate Cole Brooks to knot the score 1-1 after the competion of the fifth. 

The Panthers responded with two unearned runs in the top of the sixth to take back the lead, 3-1, over Saginaw Valley State. 

In the top of the seventh, DU loaded the bases with the right fielder up to the plate. The Panther hit a grand slam, knocking their final score of the evening at seven runs. 

Saginaw Valley switched catchers, putting Griffin Green up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. With a triple from the catcher, Eding's ground out to the short stop scores Green to finalize the count, 7-2. Davenport takes the victory to trail 2-1 in the series against the Cardinals. 

Andrew Click (4-0) from DU took the victory, working five innings, striking out four. Davenport reliever, Pete Zeimis, earned his third save on the year for his two innings of work against the Cards. 

Alex Millhisler (1-3) took his third loss of the season, pitching 5.2 innings, with two strikeouts and no earned runs. 

Brian Feinauer came in during the sixth inning, striking out three and allowed one hit. 

Caleb Somerville finished the contest for the SVSU staff, working .1 inning, allowing one hit and no earned runs.

The SVSU Baseball team will conclude the weekend series Saturday (Mar. 31) morning at the SVSU Baseball Complex. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. against the Panthers.
