Cardinals Stunned by Walsh in Series Finale, 4-3

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team dropped a heartbreaker at Walsh University today (April 21) in extra innings, 4-3. The Cavaliers (18-14, 12-10 GLIAC) have taken 4-of-5 contests so far this season against the Cardinals (11-18. 9-10 GLIAC).

The first two innings of the rubber match remained scoreless between the Cardinals and Cavaliers until the third inning when SVSU jumped on the scoreboard after a sacrifice foul fly from Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich.). Tyler Schwanz (Novi, Mich.) tagged up and scored on the play giving SVSU the 1-0 edge.

With two outs in the sixth, Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) touched home giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead resulting from an error by the Walsh third baseman.

Saginaw Valley possessed a 2-1 advantage heading into the ninth inning when Andy Orr (Utica, Mich.) gave his pitching staff an insurance run with an RBI single to left field scoring Dylin Eschenburg (Shelby Township, Mich. / Eisenhower).

However, Walsh continued their success in the series against the SVSU bullpen by manufacturing a pair of runs to tie up the contest at 3-3 as the two squads headed to extra innings.

After the Cardinals were unable to bring home a man in scoring position in the top of the 10th, the Cavaliers came through with a 2-out single to right field for the 4-3 victory.

Senior starting pitcher Mike Schaaf (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill) picked up a tough luck no decision today throwing a career-high eight innings of work scattering eight hits and giving up just one earned run in the sixth while striking out five.

Senior Justin Drzewicki (Bay City, Mich. / Central) picked up the loss on the mound for SVSU.

The Cardinals will return home this Wednesday (April 24) for a doubleheader against Hillsdale College at 2 p.m.
