ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team dropped a 12-5 decision in game one at Grand Valley State University today (April 17). The night cap of the doubleheader was rained out.

Game One - GVSU 12, SVSU 5 - Box Score

The Cardinals (10-16, 8-8 GLIAC) faced a 7-0 deficit after allowing six runs in the second inning. Saginaw Valley's offense went to work in the third inning picking up three runs on RBIs from Ryan Hotmer (Walbridge, Ohio / Owens CC), Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich.) and Andy Orr (Utica, Mich.).

After a solo home run gave GVSU an 8-3 lead, Brad Schalk (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Bishop Foley) came through with a two-out RBI single to right field. Freshman Brendon Hayes (Livonia, Mich / Stevenson) hustled home from second to score, cutting the deficit to 8-4.

However, Grand Valley answered once again in the fifth with three more runs after their second home run of the contest to take an 11-4 edge.

Tyler Schwanz (Novi, Mich.) recorded a fielder's choice RBI to score Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich. / Bullock Creek) for SVSU's fifth and final run of the contest.

The large deficit was too much to overcome as the Lakers ended up winning the contest by a 12-5 final score as the rain rolled into Allendale.

Chet LaFave and Brendon Hayes led the Cardinal offense with two hits each.
