Miscues Cost Saginaw Valley in Florida Finale

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team the finale of their season opening 2013 Clearwater Invitational with a tough 3-1 loss against Tiffin University.

Tiffin opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second inning before tacking another one on in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 advantage.

Freshman Tyler Schwanz (Novi, Mich.) put the Cardinals (2-8 overall) on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Richard Guglielmi (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth), who reached on a hit-by-pitch to lead off the inning.

Saginaw Valley posted two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning after Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich.) smoked an RBI double to deep left. Andy Orr (Utica, Mich.) came around to score all the way from first on the play to cut the deficit to two.

With two outs in the same inning, Ryan Hotmer (Walbridge, Ohio / Lake) came through as he laced a single to right field to plate LaFave. The Cardinals then trailed 4-3 entering the seventh inning.

The SVSU offense was unable to get into a rhythm as the Dragons ultimately went on to the 6-3 decision.

Senior Eric Hummel (Menominee, Mich.) picked up the loss on the mound for SVSU giving up just one earned run in four innings of work.

SVSU will return back to Michigan and prepare for their conference opening double-header at Northwood on March 20.
