Tidwell's Gem Lifts Saginaw Valley Past Findlay, 7-2

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team picked up a 7-2 victory over the University of Findlay on day five of the season opening 2013 Clearwater Invitational with another stellar outing from SVSU starting pitchers.

The Saginaw Valley bats didn't waste any time coming alive as they pushed across three runs in the top of the first inning to take the early 3-0 edge. Andy Orr (Utica, Mich.) kept his strong start going with a two-run single back up the middle scoring Brad Schalk (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Bishop Foley) and Michael Craig (Milan, Mich.).

The Cardinals continued to impress in their second at-bat with a four-run, six hit effort to take a big 7-0 advantage. Andy Orr picked up another RBI on a fielder's choice before three straight RBI single from Ryan Hotmer (Walbridge, Ohio / Lake), Chet LaFave (Charlotte, Mich.) and Chris Perkovich (Canton, Mich.) gave SVSU the big lead.

Findlay answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning but those were the last runs of the contest as both defenses shined as the Cardinals picked up the 7-2 victory.

Starting pitcher Andrew Tidwell (Canton, Mich.) gave up just two unearned runs in the second inning on his way to a victory in his second appearance of the season. Tidwell threw a complete game, six-hitter as he threw 136 pitches while recording six strikeouts in an impressive showing on the mound.

Saginaw Valley, now 2-5 on the season, will return to action tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. to battle Cedarville University at Frank Tack South in Clearwater.
