Cardinals Roll to First Victory with 11-3 Triumph over Oaks

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team gained an 11-3 victory over Oakland City University on day three of the season opening 2013 Clearwater Invitational.

Andy Orr (Utica, Mich.) produced the first run of the day for SVSU as he ripped a 2-2 pitch to deep left center with two outs scoring Michael Craig (Milan, Mich.) from first for the 1-0 edge.

Oakland City battled back in the top of the second inning with a pair of runs to gain a 2-1 advantage.

Center fielder Brad Schalk (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Bishop Foley ) picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth before Andy Orr came through with a big two-run double with two outs as the Cardinals posted five runs on three hits to take a 6-3 lead.

In the seventh, SVSU busted the game open to go ahead by an 8-3 margin. Ryan Hotmer (Walbridge, Ohio / Lake) picked up his first RBI of the year with a single through the right side scoring Luke Valutis (Shelby Township, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower ) and Andy Orr. Nathan Kuehne (Midland, Mich.) and Brad Schalk added back-to-back infield singles to extend the advantage to 10-3.

A deep fly to right field gave Ryan Hotmer his third RBI of the contest in the eighth inning to cap off the Cardinal scoring as they claimed their first victory of the season, 11-3.

Freshman Dylan Wisniewski (Southgate, Mich. / Riverview Community) threw 5.2 innings to pick up the victory in his first start at SVSU striking out seven batters while giving up three runs on nine hits.

Fellow freshman Ryan Bazner (Canton, Mich.) came on in relief and kept OCU at bay as he recorded 2.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

Saginaw Valley batters combined for 11 hits, while assistant coach Karl Kling's pitching staff recorded 12 strikeouts on the afternoon.

SVSU baseball will be back to work tomorrow for a pair of nine innings contests between Rockhurst (2 p.m.) and St. Leo (6 p.m.) at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater.
