Softball Outslugs SVSU 8-7 For Sweep

Warriors rally from four down and three down for win.

DETROIT -- The 16th-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (37-8 overall, 13-3 GLIAC) rallied twice (down 4-0 and 7-4) for an 8-7 triumph to complete a doubleheader sweep of 11th-ranked Saginaw Valley (22-7 overall, 9-5 GLIAC) Sunday afternoon at the WSU Softball Complex.

The Warriors are 29 games above .500, eclipsing the 28-game mark set by the 1993 squad (43-15), which holds the school record for wins in a season.

The Cardinals tallied four runs in the bottom of the first on four hits and a pair of WSU errors.

Wayne State responded in the top half of the second as Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) doubled to left field and scored as Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) drilled a 1-2 offering for a double to center field.  A single by Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) put runners on the corners.  On a strikeout, pinch-runner Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.) stole second.  After a pop out, Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) smacked a double to left center cutting the deficit to one.  Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) followed with an RBI single to left on a 1-2 pitch.

After a couple of scoreless innings, SVSU tallied three runs on three hits with another two WSU errors in the bottom of the fifth to grab a 7-4 lead.

In the top of the sixth, pinch-hitter Bailey Reid (Guelph, Ont. / Ross Collegiate V.I.) singled with one out, and scored on Allen's two-out, two-run blast to left field, her 19th career home run.

WSU senior pitcher Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) replaced reliever Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) to start the bottom of the sixth.  Hanes struck out the side on 11 pitches.

In the top of the seventh, Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) walked on five pitches to start the frame.  A sacrifice bunt by Ryan advanced pinch-runner Kassie Snyder (Marine City, Mich.) to second.  Following a ground out, Omelanchuk singled up the middle scoring Snyder with the tying run.  Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) then laced the first pitch of the third baseman's glove for an infield hit.  Reid drilled the first offering up the middle plating Omelanchuk with the go-ahead run.

Hanes struck out the first SVSU batters in the bottom of the seventh before Ashley Jordan singled down the right field line, but Jessica McKeith grounded out on a 3-1 pitch to end the contest.

Hanes won her 30th game of the season with two innings of scoreless relief.  Cain allowed three runs in 4.2 innings on five hits after Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont. / St. Mary's) allowed four runs in 0.1 innings.

Lauren Memmer suffered the loss (3-3) after allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits in seven innings with three walks and one strikeout.

Allen went 3-for-4 with three RBI to finish the week at .625 (15-24).  Ryan, Omelanchuk and Reid each had two hits, while Stanley was on base three times via a walk.
