SVSU Cardinal Senior Spotlight - Austin Koin

SVSU Cardinal Senior Spotlight - Austin Koin

Saginaw Valley State University Athletics will be releasing a series of student-athlete spotlights, which will feature some of our Cardinal senior student-athletes from the 2019-20 academic year. Stay tuned to www.svsucardinals.com over the next few weeks to get to know our SVSU seniors a bit more.

We continue our series today with a feature of SVSU Baseball student-athlete Austin Koin. Koin is a native of Sterling, Michigan and has played for the Cardinals since the 2017 season. He has suited-up in 65 career games at the outfield and first base positions.

Koin's favorite memory while competing for the Cardinals is his first collegiate home run, which was a grand slam against Illinois-Springfield earlier this year.

His favorite road trip at SVSU was the past spring break trip, saying that it was nice to be able to play in some warm weather for some of the season-opening games in Nashville and Florida.

Austin is set to graduate this upcoming summer with a bachelor's degree in business management.

SVSU Baseball Head Coach Steve Jaksa on Austin Koin...

"When we came in, Austin was an outfielder and coming off an injury. We were short on infielders, so we moved him to first base and he has pretty much been the guy at that position for the last two seasons. He hit in the middle of our lineup and continued to get better at the plate. Austin, coming from a coaching pedigree, understands the game very well and that was the main reason he was able to play multiple positions for us. He understands the game from the coaching aspect as well and his intrinsic leadership was needed in order for us to be successful. I credit him and what he has contributed to this program, as he is always about what's best for the team!"
