Lady Cardinals Place First at MIC's

HILLSDALE, Mich. -  The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's cross country teams competed today (10/7) in the Hillsdale College hosted Michigan Intercollegiate Championships.  The Cardinals competed well in a very competitive field of teams including Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) members Hillsdale College, Grand Valley State University, and Wayne State University.  The men's team would earn a seventh place finish in a field of 22 teams, while the women finished first in a field of 17 teams.

The women's team was led by junior Lauren Hill (Flat Rock, Mich.) who finished eighth overall coming in with a final time of 19:05.78 for the 5K race. Sophomore Alycia Wright (Macomb Township, Mich./Lutheran High North) placed 12th overall with a final time of 19:19.17, whileJean Hollerbach (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) finished right behind with a time of 19:19.65. Hollerbach was followed by freshman Emily Short (Tawas, Mich.) who finished in 14th with a time of 19:19.87 and Chantelle Fondren (Chesaning, Mich.) who finished with an overall time of 19:27.21 which was good for 15th overall earning her a spot in the Cardinals top-five.

The men's team was led by junior Tyler Noble (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd HS) who finished 11th overall coming in with a final time of 26:45.97 for the 8K race.  Junior transfer Joseph Burelle (Sterling Heights, Mich./Livonia Stevenson HS) finished just behind Noble crossing the line at 27:10.89 which was good for a 26th place finish.  Burelle was followed by junior Eric Spitz (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) who claimed 45th place timing in at 27:34.81.  Freshman Drew Meylan (Bay City, Mich./Bay City Western HS) earned a spot in the Cardinals top-five crossing the line with a final time of 28:10.69, good for a 66th place finish.  Rounding out Saginaw Valley's top-five were teammates Greg Baade (Warren, Mich./De La Salle Collegiate) and Jacob Lauka (Oxford, Mich./Lake Orion HS) who clocked in at 28:13.16 and 28:15.13, respectively, good for 70th and 73rd places.

The Cardinals will be back in action Saturday (10/22) when they compete in the Ashland University hosted GLIAC Championships.
