Season ends for SVSU in GLIAC quarters at Northern Michigan

MARQUETTE, Mich.—The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team saw its 2022 campaign come to a close on Wednesday with a quarterfinal loss in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament to Northern Michigan University, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, at Vandament Arena.

The No. 7 seed Cardinals end their season at 10-20 overall while the second-seeded Wildcats advance to the GLAIC Semifinals with a 23-7 mark.

Rylee Zimmer smashed a season-high 18 kills for the Cardinals, who also got 14 from Madison Thompson. Both student-athletes completed a double-double as Zimmer had 14 digs to lead the team and Thompson added 10.

The Wildcats' Jacqueline Smith had a match-high 21 kills while hitting .370 and teammate Lizzy Stark posted 20 terminations and hit .256.

Northern Michigan got off to a strong start to take the opening set by eight points, outhitting the visitors .423 to .160.

But the Cardinals turned the table on their hosts in the second set by registering a .378 attack percentage and holding NMU to .121, evening the match after the six-point set win.

Peyton Gerstacker directed the SVSU offense with 35 assists and she had three blocks. Despite the loss, SVSU outhit NMU .254 to .210 on the evening.

Four days after notching 20 team blocks, the Cardinals recorded 12 solo blocks tonight for a season's best. Sage Schumacher joined Gerstacker and Zimmer in the block party with three apiece.

Saginaw Valley overcame a 15-12 deficit in the fourth set to eventually go up 20-19 on a NMU attack error. But after a 21-tie, the Wildcats quickly took control with a pair of kills and a service ace for a two-sets-to-one lead in the match.

The fourth and final set also was decided by a 25-22 score. Zimmer's kill gave the Cardinals their only lead in the frame, 3-1. The score was tied 14-all when NMU won eight of the next 12 points to match their biggest lead at 22-18, and the Cardinals couldn't recover.
