SVSU drops mid-week matchup with Wayne State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team dropped a three-set Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match to Wayne State University on Tuesday night at the Hamilton Gymnasium.

The Cardinals battled the Warriors in a close opening set, but the visitors edged SVSU 25-22. After WSU easily took the second set 25-13, the Warriors rallied from an early deficit in the third to close the match with a 25-22 win.

The loss is the fourth straight for the Cardinals and drops SVSU to 10-15 overall and 5-9 in the GLIAC.

Madison Thompson led the SVSU offense with 11 kills, adding five total blocks on defense. Rylee Zimmer finished with a double-double, recording 10 kills and 13 digs. Kelsey Vittitow had a team-high 16 digs, while Peyton Gerstacker finished with 23 assists.

The Cardinals finished with a .119 hitting percentage.

Wayne State, which swept the season series with the win, was led by Kayla Giroux with 15 kills.

The Cardinals close the home portion of the 2022 schedule this weekend with a pair of matches starting against Northern Michigan University at 7 pm on Friday at the Hamilton Gymnasium.
