Wildcats top Cardinals in three sets

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team fell to Northern Michigan University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday in Marquette, Mich.

After dropping set one 25-18, the Cardinals battled back late in the second before falling 25-21. NMU closed out the match with a 25-16 win in set three, scoring seven of the final nine points of the match.

Rylee Zimmer led the SVSU offense with 12 kills, adding a team-high 11 digs for a double-double and four solo blocks. Madison Thompson added 10 kills and a .364 hitting percentage for the Cardinals.

Setter Peyton Gerstacker recorded 26 assists, along with five kills and seven digs for SVSU.

 The Wildcats were led by Jaqueline Smith with a match-high 14 kills, adding 13 digs.

The Cardinals compete next at the Regional Crossover Tournament starting Friday in Hammond, Ind.
