SVSU drops two on final day in California

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team closed its trip to California with day two of the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Classic on Saturday.

The Cardinals lost a marathon, five-set match with Biola University (28-30, 24-26, 25-18, 27-25, 15-12) to open the day. In the final match of the tournament, SVSU fell in four sets to Concordia University-Irvine (25-19, 23-25, 25-11, 25-14).

The losses drop SVSU to 1-3 to start the season.

Against Biola:

  • The offense was led by four Cardinals with double-digit kills. Sarah Veal had a team-high 17 kills, adding 10 digs.
  • Madison Thompson added 13 kills.
  • Rylee Zimmer recorded 11 kills, a team-high 17 digs, and five total blocks, including three solo.
  • Makaylah Roberts finished with 10 kills and five block assists.
  • Peyton Gerstacker orchestrated the SVSU offense with 47 assists, adding 14 digs.
  • Kelsey Vittitow recorded 13 digs.
  • The Cardinals finished with a .179 hitting percentage and 11 total blocks.

Against Concordia (CA):

  • Thompson led the offense with 10 kills, adding 12 digs.
  • Zimmer finished with nine kills, and a team-high 20 digs.
  • Gerstacker added 25 assists and 14 digs.
  • Veale recorded nine kills.
  • The Cardinals had a .064 hitting percentage and had 11 total blocks.
