The SVSU Volleyball Win Streak Continues

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University Volleyball team swept weekend play with wins over Purdue Northwest Friday (Oct. 11) and Saturday (Oct. 12) against Parkside in SVSU's Hamilton Gymnasium. The with the two wins the Cardinals have now won the last six games in a row and improve their overall record to 13-4 and 7-2 in GLIAC play.

The Cardinals commanded the first set going on an early 4-0 run to put SVSU up 13-7. This six point deficit was too much for the Rangers to overcome as SVSU would close out the set, 25-17.

SVSU started the second set in a similar fashion to the first set taking an early four point lead by a score of 5-1. The Cardinals continued to pour it on as Maria Vukaj and Haley Clum would have a pair of blocks and Vukaj would add a kill in a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 11-4. Parkside would fight back late in the match but could not make up the difference as they would fall in the second set, 25-19.

The Rangers controlled the third set keeping the match close as the match was knotted, 12-12. The Rangers would score five unanswered points to go up 17-12 and this five point deficit was too big for the Cardinals to make up as they would fall 25-17.

The fourth set was controlled by the Cardinals as they opend the scoring the first five points unansered to lead, 5-0. SVSU led the entire match and made a run from 12-14 to 19-12 and created a gap too big to suprass as the Rangers fell, 25-20.

Inside the Box Score

  • Junior Emily Friesl earned 'Player of the Match' honors for the second time this weekend recording 12 kills and led the team in hitting percentage with .429. She also had three blocks and two service aces in the match against Parkside
  • Sarah Tabit led the team in kills with 16 and added 10 digs and a block against Parkside
  • Olivia Dean had eight kills, six digs, and three service aces
  • Hannah Tabit led the Cardinals in assists with 41 and added six kills, a pair of service aces, two blocks and 10 digs

 "Parkside was serving tough, and playing some good defense. But our serve-receive stepped up and we started attacking smarter. Our serving was pretty solid today, and Sarah Tabit and Emil Friesl really had a good day attacking."
