The Cardinals Fall in Final Day of UIndy Tournament

Indianapolis, Ind. – The SVSU Volleyball team fell in the first match to tournament host Indianapolis, 3-0, and dropped the second match to Saint Leo (Fla.), 3-1, moving the Cardinals record to 6-2.

Game One: SVSU 0 - UIndy - 3

The Cardinals fell to the Greyhounds in the first set, 25-23, but were able to record 12 kills and a match high hitting percentage of .226. SVSU struggled to get anyting going in the second set and fell to UIndy by a 25-13 count. The Cardinals fought hard in the third set recording a match high 16 kills but the 13 errors would be the downfall of the final set as the Greyhounds won by a score of 25-21. With the third set victory, the Greyhounds give the Cardinals their first loss of the season.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Hannah Tabit led the team with 30 assists in the match, two blocks, and one service ace which earned her "Player of the Match" honors
  • Olivia Dean led the team in receptions with 26, 11 digs, one block, one assist, one service ace, and five kills
  • Sarah Tabit was the team leader in kills with 15, 17 digs and two assists
  • Emily Friesl recorded six kills, one service ace, three digs and one block

 "We were not able to get our offense going against UIndy, and they had too many weapons for us to overcome. We had our chance in set one, but couldn't finish and we never found our rhythm after that."

Game Two: SVSU 1 - Saint Leo (Fla.) - 3

The Cardinals earned 14 kills in the opening set against the Lions but the six errors recorded led to a loss by a count of 25-20.  SVSU entered set two with a five point comeback to help swing the momentum their way and win, 25-22. The third set saw more difficulties for the Cardinals as they recorded a hitting percentage of .152 with 8 attack errors, dropping the set 25-20. Saginaw Valley could not hold on in the fourth set losing 25-20.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Haley Clum recorded 10 kills, assisted on three blocks and earned one assist which earned the junior middle hitter "Player of the Match" honors
  • Rylee Zimmer had a huge definsive match with a team high six blocks, recorded nine digs, and one ace
  • Sarah Tabit earned the most kills for the Cardinals recording 21 while also assisting on two blocks and earning 28 digs
  • Hannah Tabit led the team in assists with 46, with a service ace, two blocks, and 10 digs

"We put up a really good fight with St. Leo, and we had some great runs. Our offense was solid and our blocking gave us some nice points, but our defense was what really kept us in the match. The Lions had some very strong attackers, and we managed to control them at times and get some great transition points."
