Cardinal Volleyball Sweeps Northwood 3-0

Midland, Mich. — Cross town rivals, Northwood University, hosted the Cardinals tonight in Riepma Arena. SVSU Volleyball swept the contest 3-0 heading to a 10-4 overall record and 4-2 in the GLIAC. NU falls to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in conference play. 

In set one, SVSU recorded a .257 with 13 kills leading to a victory, 25-18. Sarah Tabit and Maria Vukaj each had four kills from the outside to start out the match. 

As the game continued, errors started to let the Timberwolves creep in on the Cardinals but it would not be enough to defeat the SV squad. A 25-22 set two win led Saginaw Valley to a 2-0 edge heading into the locker room break. 

The Cardinals returned and cleaned up their style of play in set three, notching 11 kills with only three errors, hitting a .267 overall, while holding the Timberwolves to a .088. Saginaw Valley totaled 11 block assists, earning the match victory 3-0 after a 25-14 final set win. 

Inside the Box Score: 

  • The Cardinals were led by freshman outside Vukaj who earned player of the match accolades after posting 11 kills, eight digs and a service ace in tonight's sweep.
  • S. Tabit earned 13 kills and had three digs.
  • Abbie Toland led the defense with 18 digs, averaging six per set. 
  • Hannah Tabit had a double-double with 10 digs and 30 assists. 
  • Peyton Gerstacker had 12 digs
  • Emily Friesl posted five kills with only one error out of the middle, her best appearance since the 3-1 win over Northern Michigan on Sept. 8.
