Saginaw Valley Bounces Back With Victory Over Warriors

DETROIT — The Cardinal Volleyball team completed their trip to the South Division at Wayne State Saturday afternoon. Saginaw Valley pulled back into the match after dropping set one, taking the next three sets in a row for the match win, 3-1. 

SVSU heads to 9-4 on the season, 3-2 in conference, while the Warriors fall to 8-5, 3-2 in GLIAC play. 

The Match: 

Sarah Tabit led the Cardinal offense with four kills in the first set, but a fairly clean sheet for the Warriors, gave SVSU their first loss set of the night, 25-13. 

The Cardinals worked hard after trailing in second set to pull within one at 12-11. Although, it wasn't until 19-18 when Saginaw Valley finally pulled ahead of Wayne State with a kill from S. Tabit. 

Back-and-fourth battle for the next couple points continued between the teams until the Cardinals pulled away at 22, taking the set after a three-point-run ending with yet another S. Tabit kill, 25-22. SVSU posted 13 kills in the second set, hitting a .355 while holding the Warriors to a .194.  

In the third set, SVSU created a 22-14 lead quite quickly, but the Warriors responded cutting the lead to within one at 24-23. The Cardinals held onto the victory 25-23 edging a 2-1 lead overall in Detroit. 

Wayne State started out with a 4-0 lead for the fourth set, but Saginaw Valley quickly turned the contest in their favor, going on a six point run to take back the lead 6-4. The Warriors would remain behind the Cardinals for the rest of the contest, until knotting up 24 all. Back-to-back Warrior errors would give SVSU the win 26-24 and the match, 3-1.  

Inside the Box Score:

  •  S. Tabit led the team with her season high of 21 kills and added 10 digs to earn the Player of the Match accolades. 
  • Freshman Addison Bouza added nine kills in tonights victory, her career high
  • Abbie Toland added the team high of 22 digs
  • Rachel Eisenhour had her season high of five kills and four blocks 
  • Hannah Tabit recorded another double-double with 43 assists and 10 digs
