Cardinals Fall to the Eagles, 3-1

Ashland, Ohio — The SVSU Volleyball team headed down to the south divison of the conference to play Ashland University Friday night. The Cardinals struggled offensively to get the win, giving the Eagles the victory 3-1. 

The Cardinals now head to 8-3, 2-2 in conference play, while the Eagles continue their perfect conference record, 4-0 and head to 11-2 overall.

The Match:

The SVSU team came out hot, toppling the Eagles 25-19 in set one. The Cardinal team attacked well, with 16 kills and attacked a .361. Saginaw Valley held Ashland to a .188. 

Offensive errors hurt the Cardinals in set two, leading to Ashlands success. Even with Sarah Tabit leading SVSU with seven kills, the 10 total team errors gave Eagles the push they needed to take down the Cards, 25-14. 

Saginaw continued to struggle offensively in set three, hitting negative for the second time in the match. Ashland controlled the set, hitting a .273 with 14 kills, winning the set 25-13. The Eagles now edged out a 2-1 lead in sets played. 

Set four followed the path for the Cardinals, as the Ashland Eagles took the final set, 25-15, and the match, 3-1. 

Inside the Box Score: 

  • S. Tabit led the team with 11 kills and two aces 
  • Hannah Tabit earned 28 assists with eight digs
  • Maria Vukaj and H. Tabit each had five kills
  • Abbie Toland led the team with 20 digs
  • Haley Clum posted four blocks, leading the SVSU team

The Cardinal team will head to Detroit to take on the Warriors of Wayne State on Saturday. WSU is now 3-1, 8-4 overall, after a 3-0 win over Lake Superior State on Friday. First serve is set for 2 p.m. in the Mattaei Volleyball Facility. Live video and stats will be available.
