DETROIT— The Saginaw Valley State Volleyball team suffered another GLIAC loss Friday evening to opponent Wayne State. The Warriors struggled to consistently keep a lead over the Cardinals, but always finished out on top in the final five points, earning a 3-0 match victory.
Set one was in favor of the Cardinals victory statistically. SVSU held the Warriors to a .073 hitting percentage, but with late errors on the Cardinal defense, WSU made a comeback in the final five points to take the victory 25-23.
Wayne State brought their A game into set two, posting 17 kills to the Cardinals six. WSU posted a .308 hitting percentage, holding Saginaw Valley to a zero. Warriors took set two 25-21, and a 2-0 edge against the Cardinals.
Set three was very similar to set one as the Saginaw Valley team struggled to finish after gaining a lead. After knotting up the score 20-20 in set three, the Cardinals struggled to earn the lead to finish. With a service ace by WSU, the game was finished with a 25-22 victory for the Warriors.
Inside the Box Score:
• Outside Olivia Dean lead the Cardinal offense for the first time this season with a .231 hitting percentage. She also contributed two service aces.
• Sarah Tabit grabbed a .206 hitting percentage with 11 kills and nine digs.
• Hannah Tabit contributed 21 assists and four digs. She also added two aces.
• Abbie Toland lead the defense with 13 digs, followed by teammate Lindsey Jacobs with 10.
• Team posted 42 digs in the three set match.
From head coach Will Stanton:
"We really played well for 3/4 of each set, but was unable to finish the work when it counted. Our blocking was solid and our serving got us back into the fight a few times. Although, our passing broke down at the end of all three sets tonight."
Up Next:
The SVSU Volleyball team will head on the road one last time in October to take on GLIAC rival Grand Valley State on Saturday. The Lakers took a 3-1 victory over Lake Superior State on Friday. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
