Saginaw Valley Splits in Final Day of Midwest Regional Crossover

Aurora, Ill.— The Saginaw Valley State Women's Volleyball team split in the final day of the Midwest Regional Crossover Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals first defeated Maryville 3-1 and followed with a 3-0 loss over Truman. 

SVSU heads to 5-15 on the season and ends the Midwest Regional Tournament with a 1-2 record. 

Game One
Score: Saginaw Valley 3, Maryville 1
Records: SVSU (5-14, 3-6 GLIAC) | MU (1-18 overall)

Day two brought many tight sets for the Cardinals, starting off with a loss against the Saints, 26-24, giving Maryville the 1-0 edge.  

Saginaw Valley trailed in set two for the beginning 10 points, but snagged a six point point to take the lead 16-10. With a great ace by Abbie Toland, the Saints called a timeout to regather. After the return to play, Maryville went on a five point run to return to a knotted up score of 15-15. Both teams battled back and forth, but the Cardinals pulled ahead with a few hitting errors on the Saints offense, giving them the lead for the remainder of the set, winning 25-20 and evening out the playing field at 1-1. 

The Cardinals dominated the third set, never allowing the Saints to earn a lead of any kind. Even with the Saints offense swinging aggressively and earning 17 kills, the ten errors evened out the score. Saginaw Valley kept their composure and contributed 11 kills with only five errors, taking the set 25-23 and the lead 2-1 in sets. 

The final set brought much success for the Cardinals. Both teams had only four hitting errors, but key aces from the back line from Saginaw Valley, brought a 25-15 victory over the Saints. Saginaw Valley went on to take the match 3-1, their first victory during the Midwest Regional Crossover this weekend. 

Inside the Box Score

• The Cardinals contributed eight aces during the four set match. 
McKenzie Schuster and Rachel Eisenhour lead the offense with a .250 hitting percentage. 
Hannah Tabit earned 45 assists. 
Abbie Toland lead the SVSU defense with twenty digs, averaging five per set. 
• Haley Clum lead the net with five blocks. 

Game Two
Score: Truman 3, Saginaw Valley 0  
Records: SVSU (5-15, 3-6 GLIAC) | TU (10-11 overall)

With big swings and timely aces from the Truman offense, the Cardinals struggled early on to gain the lead, but were able to earn a four point run to tie the set, 12-12. Truman responded back with two points, but the Cardinals rallied back for the second time to gain a 21-18 lead. Yet again, Truman fights back with to 24-24 and eventually the set, 27-25. Bulldogs take the 1-0 edge heading into set two. 

Bulldogs came out strong early in the second set, with a 3-1 lead. From then on, it was a battle along the net for the remained of the match. Cardinals errors brought a tough 25-20 set loss, with Truman holding SVSU to a -.022 hitting percentage. The Cardinals trail 2-0 in sets played. 

Set three was a battle for the two teams, with Saginaw Valley earning their first lead of the set at 9-8. The Cardinals kept the lead with Olivia Dean on the line until 12-9. With tough swings from Sarah Tabit on the outside, the Cardinals pushed the lead to 14-10. Truman pulled back with a huge run to tie up the set 15-15. Remainder of the set was point for point, eventually giving Truman the 3-0 victory with 26-24 set three win.

Rachel Eisenhour lead the offense, hitting a .235 out of the middle on six kills. 
Emily Nieman added in 23 digs for the Cardinal defense. 
Sarah Tabit tallied her third double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs. 
• Team contributed eight aces on the Bulldog defense.

The Cardinals will continue on the road at Wayne State Friday night (Oct. 20) beginning at 7 p.m. The Warriors are coming off of a 3-0 loss against Cedarville Saturday afternoon.
