Cardinals Drop Tight Five Set Match to Davenport

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Saginaw Valley State Women's Volleyball team took a loss Saturday afternoon (Oct. 7) against Davenport. The Cardinals worked aggressively to earn a first and third set victories, but could not hang on to the match. The Panthers took the victory 3-2 over SVSU.

Cardinals started out strong, coming off a 3-0 victory over Purdue Northwest on Friday, taking a close first set 25-22. SVSU posted 20 kills to Davenport's nine in set one. 

Set two, Saginaw Valley struggled offensively against the Panthers. Davenport held the SVSU offensive line to a team .119 hitting percentage. Davenport took set two, 25-19 and knotted up the scores, 1-1. 

Saginaw Valley and Davenport had an equal amount of kills in set three, but the Cardinals grabbed a tight third set 25-22, due to a few slight late errors by the Panthers.

Set four brought success to the Panthers offense and defense, as they posted 11 kills and held Saginaw Valley to a -.025 hitting percentage. With the large amount of hitting errors, the Cardinals fell in set four, 25-16.

Davenport carried the momentum over from set four into set five, as they started out on a 8-1 run. Cardinals fought hard to come back, but the distance was to far. SVSU dropped set five 15-11, and the match, 3-2.

Inside the Box Score

Emily Friesl posted 13 kills, a .345 hitting average and three blocks, earning her the "Player of the Match."
Rachel Eisenhour added in 10 kills, hitting .350.
• McKenzie Schuster tallied 21 kills, her career high with the Cardinals.  
Sarah Tabit notched in her second double-double of the season, with 17 kills and lead the team 16 digs. 
Hannah Tabit recorded 53 assists, her career high.

"We struggled to play with consistency today, and that cost us a match that we were good enough to win. Our serve receive dropped off for awhile, then our hitting would drop off. We showed great heart and kept battling back, but in game 5 it was just too much to overcome."
