Saginaw Valley Takes Down Purdue Northwest, 3-0

Hammond, Ind. — Saginaw Valley State Women's Volleyball team took a 3-0 victory on the road Friday night (Oct. 6) against Purdue Northwest. Cardinals stayed strong defensively, posting 46 digs and 11 blocks.

Cardinals and the Pride knotted up multiple times throught tonights first set, with Saginaw Valley ending up on top with a 28-26 victory to earn a 1-0 edge. The team grabbed a .200 hitting percentage with 16 kills. McKenzie Schuster was a top swinger for the Cardinals, hitting a .444 with five kills. 

Set two brought the Cardinals some success early on, keeping the lead until the Pride tied it up at 14-14. Purdue Northwest tried to sneak a few points in, but Saginaw Valley stayed strong and battled back on top with a three point run to make the score 20-18. PNW struggled to ever get back on top and a kill from senior McKenzie Schuster lead to a SVSU victory, 25-21. Cardinals are now up 2-0 in sets play.

Saginaw Valley dominated set three, keeping the lead for the majority, taking a 25-22 victory over the Pride. Score leader Sarah Tabit posted five kills in set three, ending the night with 15 kills. Cardinals took the match 3-0 and bounced back from a tough previous schedule losses.

• Middle Rachel Eisenhour hit .500 and added six block assists, earning her "Player of the Match."
• Outside Sarah Tabit lead the team with 15 kills and added eight digs.
• Oppsite McKenzie Schuster recorded 11 kills and two block assists. 
• Libero Abbie Toland notched in 11 digs. 
• Setter Hannah Tabit added 37 assists.

"We had to fight through some tough serving by one, and our serve receive stepped up in set 2 and 3. Our offense was a little shaky early as well with too many hitting errors. But we got our balance late in set 1 and really played well to finish that set and I think that set the tone for the rest of the match. We played with good confidence and poise the rest if the night. Our blocking really made a difference through set 2 and 3."

The Cardinals will face Davenport University on Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. The Panthers are coming off a 3-0 victory over Lake Superior State.
